Updates on the Pimax Crystal Super VR headset
The housing has been made more compact, and the optics have been optimised.
Pimax reports on a development update for the upcoming Crystal Super VR headset. The company reports that now it has reduced the housing volume by nearly 30%. Pimax says the final aspherical glass lenses are done, and they're actually 30% bigger than the Pimax Crystal and Crystal Light; these are said to provide a much wider field of view. The QLED version of the displays can achieve a native resolution of 3840 × 3840 pixels per eye. Meanwhile, Pimax also shows off through the lens for the first time in the video below from YouTube. The micro-OLED version is still under development, and the interchangeable optical system for switching between the QLED and Micro OLED panels is also not yet ready. Pimax says we can expect to see a working sample of the QLED version by the end of this month or next month. The company also said the QLED version of the Crystal Super will be launched first because it's got the most pre-orders.
A VR headset for enthusiasts
In April, Pimax announced the Crystal Super, which it calls a PC VR headset for enthusiasts. It rocks 29.5 million pixels, inside-out tracking, and eye tracking with dynamic foveated rendering. The Crystal Super is also the first headset given an interchangeable optical system, which means people can switch between QLED and micro OLED panels.
The QLED engine features interchangeable aspherical glass lenses, while the Micro OLED engine uses pancake lenses. Pimax mentions the Crystal Super's starting price of $1,799 USD in the US. The company is known for its ambitious VR headsets and continues on this path with the Crystal Super and the new 60G Airlink module for wireless PC VR.
